Frankenstein Questions Week of 4/11 Period 7

1)How does Victor characterize the interests and characters of Henry, Elizabeth, and himself?

Think about who these characters are based on what you have read thus far.

Also make inferences about what might happen to them as the novel unfolds.

Thanks,
Mrs. Breen

  1. Victor characterizes Henry as a good friend. The way Victor grew up usually leads for people like him to grow strong attractions towards others. This as well can explain why he says Elizabeth is "his". He says it almost as if she's an object with an owner.

I believe that those few people that victor held tight to somehow and for some reason parted from him. Which might be the reason why we discussed what feelings and emotions are brought from being lonely. As a result to being smart and curious is why "the monster" was created.
I believe further in the story its going to get more in depth on how, why, and when (etc.) it happened.

  2. Victor characterizes the interests of Henry by describing him not only as a peer and schoolmate, but also as a close friend. Throughout the chapter Victor talks about their flourishing friendship, the differences in their childhood, and how Henry also comes to be a scientist like Victor.

Victor characterizes Elizabeth almost like a little sister, someone he must protect. Elizabeth's character represents the women's role throughout the play, passive and submissive.

Victor characterizes himself as person who not only loves nature, but also someone who loves knowledge, which parallels Robert Walton. Throughout the first chapters not only do we see his idle upbringing, but his initial beliefs and aspirations. We get to know more about Victor's character as he talks about himself and his relationship with Henry and Elizabeth.

  3. To Catherine's comment:

I agree with Catherine, I believe that Victor's upbringing as an only child brought with it loneliness and made him feel possessive over Elizabeth. This represents men's dominion over women. Not only did Victor grow to love her like a sister, but he felt the need to protect her.

  4. Henry is Victors childhood friend. There friendship is very strong and seems that nothing will break up them apart. Both of them become fascinated with science and alchemy. Similar to what Lizbeth said. Henry looks up up to Victor and wants to become a scientist like him. He helps victor back to health when he falls ill. I think later on during the story something tragic will happen to Henry that will make his friendship with Victor fall apart.

Elizabeths part in the novel looks like she is Victors love intrest. She is orphaned, but is adpoted by Victors mother. They are raised together as brother and sister. Later on in the novel I think she will eventually marry Victor like his mother said her would. But just like Henry something tragic will happen that will end there relationship.

Victor characterizes himself as a person who seeks ultimate knowlegde. He explains how he grew up in the beginning of the novel. He grew up reading a book that was about alchemy, and was intrested in it and studied alchemy. We also read about his passion to know and aquire knowledge.

  5. In the story, Victor describes Henry as an old friend of his. He talks about how he also became a scientis like him and studied the things he studied.

Victor describes Elizabeth like his property that was given to him by his parents. When they introduced Victor to Elizabeth, as a joke his parents told him that they had gotten him a gift which he took seriously. Victor took it upon himself from that day forward to protect Elizabeth and love her.

Victor describes himself as being someone who has an infinite thirst for knowledge. Ever since he could remember he has been seeking more and more knowledge.

  6. Elizabeth is different from Victor and Henry. She is an orphan and adopted by Victor's mother. They both are raised by Victor's mother as siblings but somehow i think that they have something for each other.

Victor and Henry are very good friends. They are like steal, something that wont break easy. They are both interested in science which leads them to become greater friends. They both help each other when they are in bad situations and they want to be like each other.

Since bad things happen, I think that they are all going to have something in common, like they are all going to be interconnected with each other on something big. I think that there relationships are going to fall apart. For ex. Elizabeth might fall in love with Henry and Victor might get mad or something similar.

  7. To Lizbeth's Comment:

I believe that Victor's interpretation about what his parents told him is based on his scientific mind. He took it literal and didnt hesitate to do so. His upbringing didnt really affect him much when it comes to being lonely, because he always had his parent's love. His literal thinking is what made him decide that Elizabeth was indeed a gift that was given to him.

  8. As of what we’ve read I’ve understood that Elizabeth is Victor’s adopted sister. She was adopted when Victor’s mom made a trip to Italy. Elizabeth stood out to her from the other girls. As time passes Victor starts liking Elizabeth more than just a sister so he begins to say that she belongs to him.

Although Henry has a personality that is completely opposite to Henry he still considers him his best friend. He really enjoys reading books about love and romance Henry also writes songs and tales. Henry loves literature unlike Victor.

Victor characterizes himself by describing who he is now and what were his influences. How he’s a very smart person and lives a perfect world but I think that this obsession of living the perfect world is going to ruin him eventually.

  9. To Catherine's comment:

I completely agree with Catherine. I also think that who he considers that are close to him will become distant from making him lonely, which is why i think he crates "The Monster"

  10. Victor spoke about Henry as a good friend. Victor was very obsessed with science and was more of a loner. he desperately wanted a friend. I also liked that he had a fascination with learning which was good. His description of Elizabeth and how overtime he grows to like her which to me is a bit odd since she is his sister. He speaks of her as an object and a tool that he can over power and control her.

  11. To Katelin's comment:

I agree when she wrote that Victor's obsession with perfection is his tragic flaw. This characteristic leads his to create a monster which he is then responsible for. In the end comes to his down fall.

  12. Victor expresses his childhood as a very memorable one, he was very intelligent and starved for knowledge. Victor was an only child and had anything and everything he wanted.

Victor characterizes Elizabeth and Henry as unique and creative individuals. They had a played a huge role in Victors life and who he was, they were a great influence for Victor growing up.

Elizabeth was adopted as a child by Victors mother while on her trip to Italy. Elizabeth was Victors childhood friend, they were so close that he considered her more than a sister.

As Victor grows older he becomes very fond of Elizabeth and their bond become incredibly strong. Victor was not only attracted to Elizabeth but also had made a big part of his heart just for her.

Victor describes her as a beautiful girl whom he fell in love with upon first sight. The way Victor portrays her and his emotions towards her is like a fairy tale.

Victor describes Henry as a close friend and their adventures were never spent alone, they were inseparable. Victor describes Henry as very romantic and adventurous , he is also described as charming and romantic.

  13. 1. Victor characterizes himself as a man with an ideal upbringing, he is obessed with science and the different aspects that it provides to the world around him. He is content with the ideals that his father's friend has shown him.I believe that Victor will become overwelmed with his work and make new things happen.

Victor views Henry as an old friend who has always been there for him no matter what, and Henry is someone that he can confide in.

Elizabeth is viewed in the eyes of Victor as someone that he will love for the rest of his life because he believes that she was a gift from his mother and it is his duty to protect her.
